Maui Family Portrait- Tyree Family

Tyree family portrait was done by Po’olenalena Beach near the end of Wailea resort area.   It must be a great feeling when your family grow like this.  Your both children found a good lifetime partner.  You got your first grand child…  All the happy and also teary moments of being parents definitely paid off.  Yet,  journey as parents continue…

Every time we have opportunity to capture family like this, we think about our future and wonder how our daughters will grow.

Aloha,

Mieko

Maui Photography Tip – Planning before the session is key to success

Every week the phone rings with a potential client interested in having portraits created while on vacation in Hawaii. According to many of our clients,  families are too busy with their routine at home, making vacation an ideal time to organize a family portrait.

Knowing when to have portraits created is very important but so is knowing what your going to do with the images created.  Will the portraits be going in your home, given away as gifts to loved ones.

Technology has made it possible to offer wall portraits on canvas, gift prints on kodak paper, produce one of a kind coffee table books, painted portraits on canvas then embellished with acrylics, images boxes, etc. Some portrait artists are selling collections of wall portraits so that clients can design their interior space using multiple portraits in a variety of designs. Every week the phone rings with a potential client interested in having portraits created while on vacation in Hawaii. Waiting until after the images are created to decide what to do is a recipe for disaster and stress. Imagine viewing dozens of images of your family that are all good and then wondering what to do with them. Without an established goal its quite possible to be overcome, and frustrated. However, with established goals in place its easier to view and select images from the session.

Establishing priorities is part of a process we call portrait planning and this is best done long before the session ever begins. I know it sounds funny, but the thinking about size and medium of print should take place in the planning stage not the selection stage. The projection should just be about selecting the best image, not about price

Maui Photography Specializes in Large Family Get togethers

Mieko and I get contacted by members of large families that are coming to Hawaii on vacation on a daily basis. We understand that there are several families and involved, and each person/sibling has their own specific needs in addition to the needs of the entire group.

For many of our clients this is the first time in years that everyone has been assembled in the same place for a reason other than a funeral. One of the most common requests we get is to create a portrait with the entire family for the patriarchs. Then to create at least one family portrait of each siblings family.

Were professional and detail oriented. We want to make sure the clothes you select fit the decor in the room where the portrait will be displayed. We also want to know the emotion and expression desired. Looking at the camera and smiling gives one emotion, while walking along the beach and talking to each other gives an entirely different feel.

The key to a successful family portrait session with multiple families is pre -planning. Knowing the needs of the group and each sub family allows us to let you know the costs are before you get to Hawaii so there is no surprise. This way when you come to the studio to see images projected on a five foot screen the time is spent selecting the images that have the most impact not thinking about the cost.

Some families are large and 25 plus people. We understand driving everyone to a location can require effort and extra planning. Since family portraits are not something done often, it makes sense to pick the best location possible. Portraits are forever.

Having said that there are plenty of times when convenience is more important. Moving a lot of young kids, or handicapped family members can be an issue. When this happens we strive to find a location that fits everyones needs.

The hardest part of the entire process is planning and communicating before even getting to Maui.

Maui Photography launches new business Maui Photo Tours

Over the last few years we have noticed that almost every family coming to Maui has a digital camera. Technology has made it simple to point and shoot and take pictures.  Having said that a lot of people do not know what the settings on their cameras do let alone understand basic rules of composition.

So we decided to help people learn about their cameras while having fun in Maui, and recently started a new division called Maui Photo Tours.

Were offering 1/2 and full day scenic tours and workshops around the island for individuals, families, and small groups.  We will take people to locations that are good for photography and off the beaten path.  Our instructors will show  the best vantage points, provide tips on composition, and help each participant take better photographs.   At the same time he or she will be creating photographs of the tour in order to make a souvenir music side show as a gift to take home.

Were also offering mini workshops at peoples homes, or resorts.  We will come and give a concise easy to understand talk about photography and answer all your families questions, then go outside and work together to create portraits of the scenery and each other.

Workshops in Iphone photography, basic and advanced photoshop are also offered.
